Break-Outs by 1-Opener Next

Break-Outs by 1-Opener

Opener should break-out of the relays only with minimum hand judged to be unsuitable for slam opposite any positive 9-14 HCP response. Bidding reverts to natural but a GF is still in tact.

  • A break-out into 1NT is natural and LTS applies. However after a break-out into 2NT all bids are natural (ie no LTS).

  • Break-oit into Responder's known Major shows 4-card support and 15-16 HCPs with soft values.

  • A break-out into a new suit denies a fit in Responder's shown suit(s) and implies a minimum unbalanced hand.

Break-outs from the Balanced-Scheme (ie after 1-2) have specialized responses as indicated below:

Balanced-Scheme Break-Outs
2 GFR with Balanced-Scheme responses
2/ Natural 5+ suit, requesting 3-card support.
  Responder should avoid bidding 2NT without support.
2NT Stayman with responses:

3 = Both Majors
3 = Hearts only
3 = Spades only
3NT = No Major
3/ Natural 6-card minor. Requests stoppers for 3NT.
3/ Natural 6-card Major
3NT To play
