The S2-Scheme Next

This scheme includes all the 2-suiter shapes, all 5440’s and those 4441 shapes with both Majors (ie minor shortage).

On entry into the S2-Scheme, two suits are always known: viz the long suits for the 2-suiters; the two highest suits of any 5440 shape and both Majors if 4441. The two suits are always shown by Suit-Order and direct bids into the S2-Scheme after showing only one suit, infers Clubs as the second suit.

There is no key bid for the S2-Scheme (2 is the key bid for the S1-Scheme). This absence of a key bid is what distinguishes the S2-Scheme from the S1-Scheme.

The S2-Scheme contains three list of hand shapes:

  • The Main 2-suiter list: M2 = 5431, 6421, 6430, 6520, 7420,…

  • The Equal Suits list: ES2 = 4432, 5521, 5530, 6610

  • The Equal Residue list: ER2 = 5422, 5440, 6511, 7411,…

The 3-suiters with both Majors are treated separately. First show the Majors, then bid 2. This cannot be confused with the 2-key for the S1-Scheme, since two suits have already been identified.

The S2-Scheme
2 = 3-suiter, both Majors

2* -2 low-shortage
  -2N+ high-shortage
2N* -3+ 4441,(5)440
-->   4441,(5)440
2 = Canape (lower-longer)

2* -2N M2-low-shortage
  -3 Equal-Residue
  -3+ M2-high-shortage
3* -3+ M2-list
3* -3+ ER2-list
-->   M2-list
2 = Equal-Suits

2N* -3 low-shortage
  -3+ high-shortage
3* -3+ ES2-list
-->   ES2-list
(higher-longer)
2NT = M2-low-shortage

3* -3+ M2-list

3 = Equal-Residue

3* -3+ ER2-list

3+ = M2-high-shortage

-->   M2-list

Example:

1 10-14, 4+ Hearts (denies 4 Spades).
1* 2 4+ Diamonds as well.
2* 2 Lower ranking suit (Diamonds) is longer
2* 2NT Low-shortage (Clubs)
3* 3 2-4-6-1

Had I not bid the 2 then Hearts would have shown longer, therefore showing 2-6-4-1. Had I not bid 2NT, then I would have shown a high shortage (Spades). A 1-4-6-2 hand. Not bidding either 2 and 2NT would have shown 1-6-4-2.

The following features should be noted:

  • The 5440's with both minors are placed into the Equal Residue list (ER2-list). With a 5-card Major and 44-minors you should choose the stronger minor as the second suit.

  • As a memory aid note the symmetriy of the 3-suiter schemes with both minors:

  • 4441 (minors) : S1-Scheme 3-3*-3

  • 5440 (minors) : S2-Scheme 3-3*-3
