Zooming Next

After a 1 - Opening, there are occasions when Responder also has 15+ HCPs.

If Relayer sign-off or break-out into game then the Responder should zoom ie keep bidding. There are two distinct situations where Responder should zoom:

If 3NT is the last shape-showing response (for example 6322 with high-ranking 3-card suit). Here Responder should by-pass the normal 3NT response (which would show less than 15-HCPs) and zoom straight into control-showing with base at 4-controls (A = 2; K = 1). Thus:

  • 4= 4-controls

  • 4= 5-controls etc.

Relayer breaks-out into game. Now Responder's zoom depends on whether he has shown his complete shape or not:

  • Shape shown: Show controls as above from base = 4-controls.

  • Shape not shown: Make a natural descriptive bid. eg raise Relayer's last bid; try 4NT quantitative etc.
